21 questions game: how to play, plus 110 questions to ask
“21 questions” means two different games. In the first, one person asks another up to 21 questions to get to know them. In the second, it is a guessing game: one person thinks of something and the other has 21 yes-or-no questions to guess it. Both are easy to play by text or on a video call.
How to play the getting-to-know-you version
- Decide who asks first.
- The asker has 21 questions. The other person answers honestly or passes (limit passes to three, so it stays fun).
- Then swap roles.
- For a shorter game, each person asks one question at a time, back and forth, until you reach 21 between you.
How to play the guessing version
- One player thinks of a person, animal, place or object. Say which category it is.
- The other player asks yes-or-no questions, up to 21.
- If they guess correctly, they win the round and choose next. If not, reveal the answer and swap.
Good opening questions for the guessing game narrow things down fast: “Is it alive?”, “Is it bigger than a bread box?”, “Could I find it in a kitchen?”, “Is this person real?”

Guessing game ideas
For the guessing version, pick things most people know. Some starters: a giraffe, a toothbrush, the Eiffel Tower, a rainbow, a penguin, a pizza, the Moon, a violin, a lighthouse, a cactus, a rollercoaster, a snowman, a library, a volcano, a paper clip, a football, a hot air balloon, a honeybee, an umbrella and a chess board. Guessing a famous person is fun too, as long as both of you know them.
Tips for playing with someone new
- Start with light questions and save deep ones until you are both enjoying it.
- Answer your own questions too. It makes the game feel like a conversation, not an interview.
- Keep personal details private. Talk about your interests and opinions, not your name, school, workplace or where you live.
- Follow up. If an answer is interesting, ask “why?” before moving on. It does not have to count as a question.
You can try it in a random text chat or on video: suggest “want to play 21 questions?” and let the other person ask first. For more ideas, see get to know you questions and random questions to ask.
