How to end a conversation politely (online and in person)
Starting a conversation gets most of the attention, but ending one is just as much of a skill. A good ending leaves both people feeling fine about the chat, even if it was short.
This guide covers polite exit lines for in-person and online conversations, and what to do when you want to leave a chat quickly.
The simple structure of a good goodbye
- Signal that you are wrapping up. A short pause, a summary or “Anyway…” tells the other person the end is coming.
- Say something positive. Mention something you enjoyed about the conversation.
- Give a short reason, if you like. You do not owe an explanation, but a light one softens the exit.
- Say goodbye clearly. Then actually leave, rather than lingering.
Polite exit lines for in person
- “It was really nice talking to you. Enjoy the rest of your day.”
- “I have to head off, but I am glad we got to chat.”
- “I will let you get back to it. Great to meet you.”
- “I am going to grab a drink and say hello to a few people. Nice talking with you.”
- “Thanks for the recommendation. I will let you know if I try it.”
- “I need to get going, but good luck with your project.”
Ending a conversation online or by text
- “I have to go now, but this was fun. Take care!”
- “Thanks for the chat. Have a good evening.”
- “I am going to log off for the night. Nice talking to you.”
- “Great chat. Good luck with the exams!”
In a random chat, you do not need a long goodbye. A quick friendly line, then pressing Next or Stop, is completely normal. On RandomHey, Stop ends the chat for both of you, and Next ends it and looks for someone new.
When you want to leave quickly
Sometimes a conversation makes you uncomfortable. You do not owe anyone politeness when that happens.
- In person: a short “I have to go” and walking away is enough. If you feel unsafe, move towards other people or staff.
- Online: end the chat straight away. On RandomHey, Block ends the chat at once and stops you being matched with that person again, and Report sends the chat to a moderator.
- Never feel pressured to explain. Leaving is always allowed.

Common mistakes
- The long fade-out. Saying goodbye three times makes it more awkward, not less.
- Making up a big excuse. A simple, true reason works better than an elaborate story.
- Ending mid-sentence. Wait for a natural pause, unless you need to leave quickly.
- Promising to stay in touch when you will not. “Nice to meet you” is kinder than a promise you do not mean.
Practise both ends of the conversation
Starting and ending conversations get easier with practice. Read how to start a conversation with a stranger, then try both in a random text chat, where leaving is always one click away.
Try it in a real conversation
RandomHey pairs you with one random adult for a free video chat or text chat in your browser. No account, no app, and Report and Block are always visible. Adults only (18+).
